In Nicaragua as It Is in Heaven: How Students Are Changing the Culture

Something powerful happens when an opportunity does not stop with the person who receives it.

Through your support, Just One Opportunity is currently investing in 60 high school and university students from some of Nicaragua’s most impoverished communities. These students are learning English, math, science, business, teaching, healthcare, and other practical skills, but their education is meant to accomplish something much bigger than personal success.

They are learning to serve.

From the beginning, Just One Opportunity has sought out hardworking students with the potential to become leaders. Alongside their education, they are taught that the opportunities God gives us are meant to bless the people around us.

This past month, we got to see exactly what that looks like.

Marlin spent part of her month tutoring second-grade students who needed extra help in school. She also used her healthcare knowledge to serve her community by administering injections, checking blood pressure and glucose levels, and helping people understand their medications. She even participated in a small enchilada project to raise funds for community needs.

Jaritza shared how her group regularly visits an elderly woman and her brother who live alone and care for one another.

As Jaritza simply explained:

“Whenever we can, we come to help them in any way we can.”

This month, they helped clean the woman’s yard and prepared enchiladas to sell, with the profits going toward people in their community who needed help.

These are not huge organizations or complicated programs. They are young people seeing a need and deciding, We can do something about that.

Instead of only asking, “How can I build a better life for myself?” they are also learning to ask, “How can I make life better for the people around me?”

That spirit is spreading. Throughout the past month, students, pastors, teachers, and ministry leaders served families across 30 communities by tutoring children, caring for vulnerable people, strengthening churches, and sharing the Gospel. More than 100 young people participated in Christian summer camps, while many others were trained in leadership, integrity, and service.

Our goal is not just to produce graduates, but to raise teachers who care about the child falling behind, business owners who understand responsibility to their communities, healthcare workers who serve people who might otherwise go without help, and church leaders who serve with humility.

Jesus prayed:

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” — Matthew 6:10

For us, that prayer is what we want to see lived out in the remote communities of Nicaragua. It looks like a student helping a struggling second grader understand their homework. It looks like young women cleaning the yard of elderly neighbors who have no children to help them. It looks like students using the skills they have been given to change the culture around them.

That has always been at the heart of Just One Opportunity’s mission: breaking the cycle of poverty in the remote communities of Nicaragua through the practical expression of Christ’s love.
