Practical Needs

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

~ James 1:27 ~

By collaborating with the community, we aim to identify contaminated water sources and then work to clean and improve the water supply in the villages. Doing so will improve the health of all community members by reducing common and preventable illnesses, particularly those caused by parasites and unhygienic conditions. With your help, we can be successful.

JOO-sponsored students, primarily high school and college students, have learned the power of "paying it forward." For every dollar you send in support, they return to their villages and create exponential change, with minimal resources! They have set an ambitious goal to volunteer 20,000 hours in 2025, and by the end of August, they had volunteered 16,834 hours.

Most men from remote villages in Nicaragua are farmers, and their crops rely heavily on the rainy season. When the rainy season is very mild or Nicaragua experiences a drought, farmers do not have food to provide for their families. According to The World Bank, "Nicaragua has an estimated population of 6.55 million and is the second poorest country in Latin America. According to the World Bank, in 2019, 24.9 % of the country lived below the poverty line, mostly in rural areas; 41 % of Nicaraguans live in rural areas with limited access to basic services, and 31 % of the labor force is employed in agriculture."

Just One Opportunity is changing this statistic by providing opportunities for people, diversifying the economic conditions of villages by advising small businesses on ways to run their operations, and working with farmers to equip them with the tools and knowledge to plant crops year-round. We are also helping communities with legal documents, such as birth certificates, and assisting students with college applications, as well as providing tutoring to ensure they succeed in school. We are also working on providing basic sanitation, including clean water and septic systems, as well as medical assistance, such as annual checkups and dental care.

  • Medical: Since our inception in 2012, 2,000 people have received basic medical check-ups. Health improvements were made by building cooking stoves that eliminated smoke inside people's homes.

  • School supplies: Over 2,500 students have received uniforms and shoes to attend school, and over 12,000 pounds of school supplies have been distributed.

  • Food: We have distributed over 100,000 pounds of food since 2012 to help alleviate food insecurities caused by drought and excessive rain.
