When Opportunity Meets Determination: The Story of Elías Aguirre

Elías grew up in Bacacán, a remote community where limited educational opportunities and financial hardship make it extremely difficult to escape poverty or pursue higher education. Despite these challenges, he was determined to learn, work hard, grow in his faith, and build a better future.

Recognizing his academic potential, strong character, and desire to serve others, Just One Opportunity began supporting Elías in 2021 through financial assistance, mentorship, leadership development, and encouragement. Through years of dedication and strong academic performance, he earned a scholarship to study Communicative English at Keiser University in Matagalpa.

Attending university required tremendous sacrifice. Elías often traveled several hours by bus from his community to reach class while balancing his studies with demanding work, including employment in a mine.

He also looked for ways to contribute toward his educational expenses. Using his entrepreneurial spirit, Elías started a small business raising broiler chickens and selling them to businesses near his community. This experience helped support his education while teaching him responsibility, perseverance, entrepreneurship, and the dignity of honest work.

Throughout every challenge, Elías continued growing in his faith. He credits God with guiding him, strengthening him, and remaining beside him through every obstacle.

This July, after years of sacrifice and perseverance, Elías graduates from Keiser University with a degree in Communicative English.

His graduation is a powerful example of what can happen when determination is met with meaningful opportunity and long-term support. A dream that once seemed impossible is now a reality because of the support of Just One Opportunity’s donors and partners.

Elías recently completed an interview for a call center position in Managua. He hopes to begin his professional career, support his family, gain valuable experience, and become a positive influence in his community.
